This was a creepy, atmospheric, phenomenally well-acted and directed period piece horror film set in 1630s frontier New England. It wasn’t a horror film filed with jump scares or chase scenes or fighting the monster, but more of a slow burning, constantly building almost psychological horror film, a story where a family on the edge of the woods, all by themselves, the nearest village a day’s ride on their one horse, having to deal with a witch in the wood (a witch they don’t believe exists at first) and the family’s own slide into paranoia, madness, and eventually resulting in deaths. It is a grim film, with an early somewhat offscreen death quite gruesome, though I don’t think gratuitous. The family – a father (William), mother (Katherine), eldest daughter, the teen Thomasin, oldest son, next oldest child (Caleb), fraternal twins (Mercy and Jonas), and a baby that is born at their newly established farm on the edge of the wilderness (Sameul) – have to deal with a rather harsh interpretation of their Puritan religion (one not even supported by the colony they are banished from), one that focuses a lot on evil, the powers of the Devil, punishment, the corruptibility of man, being born in sin, all while coming to terms with real evil that they have a hard time recognizing. Is that evil just the evil of the universe, the evil of people as part of their basic nature, is one of them evil and responsible for the growing number of deaths and other misfortunes, or is there an evil without? Or is it some combination of factors? The period aspects were immersive, from the feel of the farm to the clothing to the accents (sometimes hard to understand, especially when the actors mumbled or spoke fast) or most of all the pervasive fearful nature of the woods, of evil, and of witches (the viewer can really see the climate that would lead to the Salem Witch Trials). Given the family’s lonely vigil on the frontier, their harsh view of an uncaring universe, their suspicions of strange and unfortunate occurrences, one could see how they would be scared of a witch. Though at times the family is their own worst enemy, not only suspecting various members of the evils that befall the farm but also of other things such as strife between the spouses or the siblings or some combination thereof, there is in fact a very real evil in the woods and on the farm, one that either almost hides in plain sight or they for a time choose to unsee (“oh it was just a wolf” or “oh those are just childish games”). The acting was fantastic, from the rumbling, granite voice of William (played by Ralph Ineson, who was just phenomenal, at times stern father patriarch, tender husband, loving father, and religious fanatic), to Katherine, a woman broken again and again by harsh reality and death, but somehow still finding a way to go on despite brushes with insanity (played by Kate Dickie), to the excellent lead character Thomasin (played skillfully by Anya Taylor-Joy, a solid anchor and touchstone for the audience, somehow readily relatable), to the absolutely superb acting by the actor playing Caleb (Harvey Scrimshaw), to the surprisingly creepy twins (Ellie Granger and Lucas Dawson, who played skillfully both “creepy horror movie twins” but also “annoying younger siblings”), I really bought into this as a real family and real people. It is at times not an easy film to watch, with real horrors visited upon the family, a grim worldview of death, suffering, and sin, a hard life on the frontier where even one silver cup is an outrageous luxury, and the ending…oh the ending…but it is well worth watching is so very skillfully crafted.
